Hot-cold storage wells

Hot-cold storage is a method whereby groundwater – either hot or cold – is stored in the soil. There are two sorts of open hot-cold ground water systems: doublets or single sources

Doublets
For this method, two sources (warm and cold) are drilled at a suitable distance to each other and filters are adjusted in both sources.

In summer, the water is pumped out of the cold source and the cold is dispensed to the building or the process. The warmed water that results from this is then pumped into the heat pump.

In winter, warm water is pumped up from the warm source and the warmth is dispensed to a heat pump. The cooled water that results from this is stored in the cold source again.

Single source
A single source works according to the same principle as doublets, but in this case, there is only one source. The cold and warm storage are not placed at a distance to each other, but one is stored on top of the other.

Capacity of sources

As with every type of source, the capacity of the source is reduced over time. During the circular pumping of the water, any contamination that is naturally present in the water is also pumped around. In addition, any minerals that are present (such as iron) will oxidize due to the presence of oxygen or degassing of the soil water.
