When these substances are dispersed over the ground, they remain mobile. This means that contaminants can end up tens of kilometres from the initial contamination site and affect ground water well. An industrial contamination can render the extraction of nearby drinking water unsafe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Prevention of contamination in drinking water<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To prevent these contaminations from polluting\u00a0 drinking water supplies, wells are drilled around the contaminated location. Water is continuously pumped up from these wells to centralize the contaminations around the well.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0The extracted water is then purified to remove any contamination so that it can then be discharged safely.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Maintenance of decontamination wells<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This type of wells are more prone to blockages than regular wells from which pure mineral water is extracted.
